Relax with a Round of Golf in East Canning

At Investors Edge, our buyer’s agents scour Perth and it suburbs in search of great investment properties. One of the sometimes underrated factors that make any Perth suburb great is the amount of recreation that is close and available.

Golf Course in East Canning

While many have work, transportation or schools as their greatest priorities when choosing a desirable place to live, many just want to be near their favourite recreational outlet. For some, it is fishing; for others, it is boating. There are many hobbies that can transform you from tired to energised and refreshed.

One of our favourite recreational sports is golf and one of our favourite public courses is Whaleback near Parkwood in East Canning.

Whaleback Golf Club

At the beginning of the 1970’s, the land upon which Whaleback currently sits was used as a holding area, sitting between the Lynwood housing estate and the anticipated Canning Vale industrial area. The parcel was named “whaleback” because it was reminiscent of a large fish to those flying over it.

The City of Canning would eventually decide to put a golf course on the property and it would officially open on 10 January, 1981. Don Fleming, the original superintendent of the course, still runs Whaleback Golf Club and original professional Peter Hopkins is still the professional and the controller.

Since 1981, both have overseen many enhancements to the course, the operation and the facilities. Among the amenities are a two-storey driving range and six tennis courts–both have lighting for night use. There is also a pro shop, change facilities and a cafe which doubles as a full service catering facility.

Why we Like Whaleback

Whaleback is a great course for a recreational golfer. It won’t be confused with a PGA tournament course anytime soon, but the average or even above average golfer doesn’t need a 7,000 yard course on a regular basis. It has some challenging terrain changes and is the perfect place to unwind.

Why we Like East Canning

East Canning is in a growing community with close proximity to a lot of recreational facilities. Those who like recreation see East Canning as a desirable place to live.
