Gwelup is a charming residential suburb set 8 miles from the central business district of Perth. It is part of the City of Stirling and is home to the Gwelup Lake. Its name was derived from the word, Gwelgannow, which refers to a swamp set on its southern tip. The suburb host more than 3,000 residents and is packed with a variety of dwellings including newly-designed 2-floor houses and classic yet cozy garden cottages. Several subdivisions pry on its lush grounds along with several facilities such as schools, shopping centers and sport recreational areas.
The suburb is set 8 miles from the center of Perth and less than a mile from Reid Highway. Boundaries include Mitchell Freeway to the east, Kerrinyup Road to the South, Old Balcatta Road to the north and Lake Gwelup.
Gwelup is ideal for families, retirees and professionals not because of its serene nature but mostly because of its abundance of amenities. Daily needs are met by the Gwelup Plaza Shopping Center and the Karrinyup Shopping Centre. There are schools within the area including the Lake Gwelup Primary School and Carine Senior High School. Dining venues are aplenty including one that serves organic dishes. It also has a senior care facility and several markets selling fresh produce.
Gwelup boasts a significant number of open spaces with recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy. The 185-acre Lake Gwelup Reserve is home to a 25-hectare wetland which allows residents to enjoy picnics and bird-watching activities as well as cycle paths and tennis courts. Residents can also enjoy the Careniup Swamp and its surrounding areas.
The northern and southern sections of the suburb are served by the 424 and 425 bus routes of Transperth, which starts from the Stirling Railway Station. This is only a 9-minute drive to the central business district of Perth. The 424 bus route provides direct access to the Karrinyup Shopping Centre.
