Set in the City of Gosnells, Southern River is a great suburb in Perth. It is fairly new as a residential suburb, having been comprised of a cluster of farms for horse breeding and chickens for egg production in the past. There are also boarding kennels for pets. Currently, the suburb is inhabited by less than 500 people but the population is expected to rise to some 15,000 in the coming years as several developments are under way. A variety of infrastructures and facilities will soon rise in the suburb. Also, there will be a total redevelopment of the entire suburb so as to create medium density residential properties with an average block size 700 m² in the next 5 years.
Southern River features a wonderful location around 22 km from Perth CBD. It is set southeast of the CBD but still enjoys easy access to the top attractions and shopping centers in the area. The suburb is also well-known for its farms and boarding facilities for pedigree dogs and cats, something that isn’t likely to change even with current developments for residential projects. It is surrounded by other suburbs: Canning Vale, Forrestdale, Huntingdale, Forrestdale, Gosnells, Camillo, and Armadale.
Southern River is home to several boarding catteries and kennels which service most of Perth’s Metropolitan area. Currently, there are no schools within the suburb but plans for these educational institutions are already included for future developments. Kids go to neighboring suburbs for school, including at Southern River College located in the suburb of Gosnells.
Southern River features a number of recreation options but mostly related to farm shows. The suburb is also well known for its breeding showing and trailing of pedigree dogs and/or cats as well as greyhound racing.
Southern River is served by bus route 212 from Perth to Huntingdale via Shepperton Rd, Albany Hwy Thornlie Station and Forest Lakes Drive (with selected extensions to Southern River).
