A residential suburb, Ashfield has seen a significant housing boom in the past which continues to the present. It began as a small community built around the railway station. The then State Housing Commission took over the area in the late 1950s to the early 1960s, initiating a housing boom that saw as many as 400 houses built over lands where homes were originally standing. To maximize space, 5 to 7 homes replaced every 3 homes that were torn to the ground and bulldozed. Now called as the Department of Housing, the agency owns roughly 22% of the homes in the area.
